Upcoming DAF versions for language students

Why do all books for language students have to be either about visits to some city, or the same old murder cases over and over again? Why should you have to learn German with books that are not up your alley? What about something more fun, like adventure and fantasy?

A “tale of Vagabonds & Bureaucrats” is for students that already have taken, or plan to take the TELC A2 exam in German.

All you need is a 1400 word basic vocabulary, derived from an official list published by the German Goethe institute, and some pretty basic grammar. New words that you may not know are introduced using German explanations and plenty of images—after all, sometimes a picture says it best.

Each section also comes with repetitions on major topics like numbers, family, or directions.

And in case you have already outgrown the A and B levels: Are you up for a real challenge? No hand-holding, no translation help, but additional scenes as your reward? In that case, you may skip right to the real deal and get the full German version for TECL C1/C2 level students. A darker, more mysterious, and more challenging journey for those who dare to extend their language skills beyond standard school level.

A tale of Vagabonds and Bureaucrats

In the middle of the night, a bureaucrat is summoned to an old man's houseā€¦and the world changes.

Names—omitted by the histories of noble houses—are whispered of again. Names of four grave-robbers, battlefield-scavengers, thieves, who will go on to become the greatest heroes of the modern age.

Caleb: responsible, burdened Caleb, eldest of the band, descendant of a reviled and violent clan of warriors, who nonetheless eschews war.

Sorak: ruthless, heartless Sorak that doesn't plan for anything beyond the next hot meal and a full pipe, who finds himself in the middle of a daring plan that will change the lives of thousands.

Estin: sensuous Estin that drifts from one situation to another, secretly hoping, wanting, who will find herself having to choose between safety, and the life of one she cares about the most.

Morgon: enigmatic Morgon, who has seen first-hand what soldiers bent on pillaging and raping will do, and who is now forced into the army as a lowly recruit.

The wrong people at the right place at the right time - they never asked for this. But the fate of the world rests on their shoulders. Because nightmares have returned to the land.

Can you wield the sharp blade of your imagination once more?

Each time you open a book, you inevitably bring your own baggage with you to the table. Childhood dreams, experiences, cultural background… Everybody thus approaches a book with certain ideas and expectations about what the characters and the plot should be. Not because our mind is lacking, but because our experiences shape our imagination. And our imagination shapes our understanding of the world: in fiction as much as in reality. Our capacity to use our imagination is an integral part of what makes us individuals—what makes us human.

This book is trying to do the impossible. To give vivid descriptions of characters and objects, without describing anything at all.

So the question stands: how?

Using no other tool, but the sharp sword of your imagination.

Because every reader comes with a complete set of expectations of how things look and work and feel and taste. By calling upon these emotions, the color of light, sounds, feeling of water on your skin and salt on your lips—by embracing the power of your mind to fill in the blanks. It is this way, the story creates a very unique, individualized experience, similar, yet different for each and every reader.

Because this story was never meant to be written for me—it was always meant for you.

Essentially, this has all of the marks of a good book; Developed characters, proper leading to conflict and a satisfying resolution, plot twists that make sense, and emotional attachment to the world left behind once the reader turns the last page to find a note from the author.

I wasn't even a full chapter in before I sent a text to my boyfriend, you have got to read this book.

About

Erik Mercer was born before the fall of the Berlin Wall, and grew up in a world dominated by shifting loyalties, espionage, and the end of an era. Erik draws upon his own experience, and the memories of old soldiers he knew, to create fantastic worlds and histories on faraway planets—because truth is always stranger than fiction, and far more credible as a novel than as a biography.
